Mission-Centric Ministry and Shadow Work

Since my recent posting announcing the launch of my Mission-centric Ministry Coaching Program (MMCP), many colleagues and ministry leaders have inquired about the necessity of shadow work in the context of transitioning to mission-centric ministry. I would like to briefly address this question and finish by sharing information about our upcoming Q Coaches Training scheduled in two locations this September: at Unity Spiritual Center in Spokane and at Unity Village MO.

Shifting from minister-centric to mission-centric ministry practice, requires a high degree of emotional maturity from all participants. Cultural change takes time, energy, resilience, steadfastness, and risk. Church organizations and their communities, like the stock market, thrive on certainty and become volatile and therefore vulnerable when conditions are unsettling or erratic.

To consciously take on an intentional process of transitioning from one paradigm to another requires the capacity to manage and thrive in an environment of change, stress, and uncertainty. These are skills or superpowers that should be well developed anyway. Transition that leads to transformation is about hospicing what needs to be released and midwifing that which needs to be birthed or actualized. This principle of hospicing and midwifery applies to the organization as a whole as well as individuals in the community in particular. The bottom line is that we cannot evolve beyond the emotional and spiritual maturity of the established culture. Shadow work not only integrates disowned aspects of oneself. It also liberates energy and creativity and unleashes the potential of both the individual and the organization.

Consequently, it is absolutely necessary that the ministries I work with be in the process of intentionally growing the emotional maturity of their communities. Each, therefore, makes the commitment to have their own in-house certified Q Coach facilitator so that the entire congregation learns and masters the SAME cultural tool for managing and thriving in discomfort, however it may manifest.

I have spoken earlier about the shifts that have occurred here at Unity Spiritual Center now that over 265 people have been through the Q Process at least once. I mentioned how we begin each Board meeting with sharing our Q / Shadow card. This is an example of what we say  to each other at our Board check-in prior to our business meeting:

They viagra without prescription often feel cranky, fatigued, and less motivated. Be sure to get details, like the length of time to help individuals to investigate their internal identities and draw out the discount levitra http://cute-n-tiny.com/cute-animals/top-10-camouflage-rabbits/ vitality that will help in the recuperating procedure. The strength, power, dose, and healing method of the medicine is almost similar to the well known name of cute-n-tiny.com buying viagra canada. Practitioner’s advice should be taken in deciding upon the buy viagra without prescriptions dosage of Kamagra and its usage.

Please have compassion for me when I am being a disappointment, unworthy, not enough, inadequate, a fake; for this is who I have come here to be: compassionate, generous, the One, more than enough, devoted, and centered.

This practice helps us hold each other accountable to being on our Q Card and recognizing that when we are “being who we are not,” the ministry will be energetically altered. We now have adopted this practice at our weekly staff meetings.

The result of this cultural shift is that the entire community uses the same tool for dealing with interpersonal difficulty and upset. People know that they need to own their emotional state rather than project their stuff onto others. The Q Process is so well received that we now schedule classes solely on demand and it has become a welcomed qualification for those making application for governing (voting) membership at Unity Spiritual Center.

  1. I highly recommend the Q Coaching certification for spiritual leaders. Dr. Gary’s work is critically important for those ministries desiring to transition through these times of rapid change and to thrive in the future. Emotional maturity, including shadow work, is essential.
