Evolutionary Council

Integral to the cultural change process of evolving into mission-centric ministry practice is measuring mission fulfillment in the lives of community members, and linking every structure, practice, and system to the intention of transforming lives and inspiring people to make a positive difference in their world.

The Evolutionary Council is a Board appointed task force consisting of 15 – 25 members and leaders within the ministry who are willing to serve for a period of 18 months to 2 years. There are two tasks for the Evolutionary Council:

TASK 1: CONSCIOUS CONVERSATIONS

The Conscious Conversations process involves reaching out and connecting all community and governing members as well as people new to the ministry to map the heart of what is moving, evolving, emerging in the experience of the entire spiritual community.

Conscious conversations are one on one interviews conducted by Evolutionary Council members. These conversations shifts communication to a deeper, more meaningful experience for both the congregate and the council member.

When people are giving attention to is the very ground from with culture arises. In minister-centric ministry there are often stories of disappointment, hurt, and distrust. In mission-centric ministry, we expect stories of transformation and making a difference. It is the primary purpose of the Conscious Conversations process is to capture these stories of how the ministry has blessed and impacted people’s lives.

In addition, community members are asked what shifts or changes would they suggest that would benefit the community and organization. They are also asked what they personally need / desire to become more fulfilled in our spiritual community.

TASK 2: MAPPING WHAT IS

The Mapping What is process looks at every structure, practice, and system in every operational dimension (volunteer, paid staff, etc) to discover the current organizational and community reality with respect to the fulfillment of the ministry’s mission. It asks the question, “why is this done this way?” If a specific practice, system, role, or manner of doing things cannot be linked to the fulfillment of purpose, the ministry is leaking energy. Any source of incoherence, unclarity, ambiguity with respect to any structure, practice, or system is identified.

Mapping What Is is an engaging and energizing process for the spiritual community. It makes the operations and status of the ministry more transparent to everyone. The process is integral to understanding the discomforts and tensions that are signs of areas that need to evolve. It looks at all four quadrants of ministry in identifying the degrees of integrity among many facets of leadership, cultural centrism, social dynamics, and organizational processes.

The Mapping What Is process looks at what is IT, how is IT, and what is happening? Each operational area of the church is identified and the people within a specific area are asked:

What is the definition of this ministry or operational area being mapped? What are the values related to this ministry or operational area? What are the specific goals or expectations for this ministry or operational area? And, are there defined objectives for this ministry or operational area? What are specific trends in this area? Attendance? Revenues? What specific issues exist in this area? What is working well? What needs attention? What patterns do you see in this area? What lessons have been learned in this ministry or operational area? What is wanting to be birthed. What is wanting to be hospiced? What needs to be addressed now? How is this area ripe for bring forth a new opportunity or innovation?
